OLAG NSMQ TEAM AT THE REGIONAL LEVEL

It is said that knowledge is power, but time and time again we witness exceptionally brilliant minds being put to the test in the National Science and Math Quiz, a contest that usually humbles powerful minds. This year, OLAG competed in the regional championships with the intent of leaving an indelible mark as the first private school ever to qualify as a regional champion.

The quiz evaluates the prowess of students in the fields of mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology. Notwithstanding, the need for critical thinking skills, speed, accuracy, and strategy comes into play besides the advantage of retentive memory. On the 5th of July, balloting for participating schools was conducted, and OLAG was represented by Mr. Ebenezer Agyemang, our quiz team coordinator, and Justice Obeng, the team president. The venue for the contest was the assembly hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School (KNUST SHS).

Team OLAG was represented by three individuals: Samuel Ofori Agyeman and Michael Okafor as the main contestants and Leeford Abagna as a substitute. These representatives performed outstandingly in the knockout stage, eliminating schools including Adanwomase SHS and Kumasi Senior High Technical School from the competition. The battle was fierce, but our team dominated each round, successfully qualifying for the semi-finals.

On the 9th of July, OLAG participated in the first contest of the semi-finals against three other schools, namely Kumasi High School, St. Louis SHS, and Opoku Ware School. All three contending schools triumphed in their previous contests, but the tournament was designed to ensure the survival of the fittest. Thus, our defeat was merciless. OLAG SHS placed last after the fourth round with a score of 20, putting an abrupt end to the momentum of our winning streak.

Indeed, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. The span of our participation may have been brief in this year’s contest, but the significance will not be undermined and will never be forgotten. With the strength of God, OLAG persists through such trials in the hope of seeing better days, so we embrace the experience as an account of the origins of the citadel of excellence.
