Acknowledging the value of proficient leaders as a fervent obligation for a better future, Our Lady of Grace Senior High School gradually develops an annual ritual of modelling legislative proceedings and diplomatic conventions. Exposure to such events entices the students to develop interests in pressing political issues and societal debates; whilst engagement heightens the wits and skills of those who role-play in these activities. Most recently, the Student Representative Council organised a Mock Parliament session to discuss and debate mock bills and resolutions, simulating the ideal parliamentary experience.
Indeed, it was an evening brimming with anticipation. With a grand procession, the school’s cadet corps and regimental band ceremoniously ushered in the participants. As they settled in their seats, the Literary Group delivered an exciting performance, demonstrating the essence of prudent but violent-free conduct towards elections in the country. Forming the majority and minority caucuses were students from various departments, all poised and ready to put their skills to the test. The speaker called the house to order, setting the tone for the debate to begin.
Two compelling topics dominated the session: “The Old Curriculum Should Be Maintained in Senior High Schools” and “Tenure in Office Should Be Extended from Four to Six Years.” Students took on their roles with passion and conviction, engaging in thought-provoking arguments reflecting their deep understanding of the topics. The debates were marked by articulate speeches, counterarguments, and a healthy exchange of ideas, demonstrating the participants’ grasp of democratic principles and parliamentary decorum.
The Mock Parliament was not only an exercise in public speaking and critical thinking but also an avenue for fostering leadership qualities and teamwork. Students learned the importance of listening to opposing views, crafting persuasive arguments, and building consensus—skills essential for future leaders.
As the evening progressed, the vibrant discussions kept the audience captivated, with moments of humour and insight adding to the event’s dynamic atmosphere. As the gavel fell, the session concluded with a vote on the debated resolutions, bringing the parliamentary experience full circle.
The Mock Parliament was a resounding success, leaving both participants and spectators inspired. It underscored the importance of civic engagement, critical analysis, and the role of young people in shaping the future. Through this initiative, Our Lady of Grace Senior High School continues to nurture a generation of informed, confident, and responsible leaders.
