9th SRC Week Celebrations

Satisfying the demands of the annual Student Week tradition has never been an easy task for the Student Representative Council (SRC). Over the years, the council has succeeded to satiate the hunger for entertainment of the student body by organizing a series of engaging activities during the SRC Week, without failing to meet the necessary standards of an educational complement. This year marked the ninth edition of the SRC Week celebration, with the theme “Past Reflections: A Positive Guide to Moulding Purpose-Driven Minds”, which hinted on a fun-packed week promising to exceed the students’ expectations.

The long-awaited SRC Week was launched on Sunday, March 9th, with an impressive parade escorted by the school’s cadets and regimental band. The SRC executives, adorned in new SRC shirts, confidently made their way to the stage. SRC President, Blessing Aduko, addressed the enthusiastic crowd, outlining an exciting lineup of events for the week, which included Cultural Day, Inter-School Debate, Rep your Jersey, Dance with Jesus/Career Day, a Fun Fair, and various side activities, culminating on Sunday, March 16th.

While classes proceeded normally on Monday, March 10th, the real excitement began on Tuesday. Cultural Day transformed the school into a vibrant tapestry of colours and traditions. Students proudly exhibited their diverse cultures through traditional attire, with stunning “gele,” “smock,” and kente cloth, among other outfits adorning the participants.

As a highlight, the entire student body gathered in the auditorium for a captivating performance by the cultural troupe, featuring local dances that served as interludes to the Ghanaian movie “Keteke”. The day was immortalized in beautiful photos, thanks to Deina Pixels and Grasoft Media, capturing the richness of our cultural diversity.

On Wednesday, students returned to the auditorium for an exhilarating Inter-School Debate Competition showcasing the talents of four competing institutions: OLAG SHS, Opoku Ware SHS, The Ridge School, and KNUST SHS. This event was particularly significant, given our school’s impressive track record in debate contests. Students Wunzoya Fadina Sule and Lisa Timbilla, delivered outstanding performances, complemented by the strong contributions from Jessica Asakibeem and Shirley Serwaa Okyere. In a nail-biting finale, OLAG emerged victorious, reinforcing the legitimacy of our school’s debating prowess

Thursday, referred to as “Rep Your Jersey Day” unveiled an array of sports jerseys and team colors. Laughter echoed through the hallways as students passionately debated the authenticity of each other’s jerseys while exchanging playful banter about their favourite teams’ achievements and league rankings.

By mid-afternoon, students and staff gathered at the school stadium for a much-anticipated football match between teachers and students. This was a rare opportunity for teachers to engage in the spirited celebrations of SRC Week. The match ended with a score of 5-2 in favor of the students, much to the delight of the student body

Friday, March 14, was dubbed Career Day. Just as lively as Cultural Day, students dressed in outfits representing their dream professions ranging from teachers and engineers to farmers and herbalists. The SRC organized a career educational talk that proved relevant to the spectrum of career options, especially for final-year students. A representative from the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana, spoke compellingly about becoming a chartered accountant, while representatives from KNUST and Wisconsin University provided insights into university course requirements. And even through the Assistant Headmistress’ address on the day’s theme, the students still fiddled in enthusiasm towards the evening’s entertainment: a much-awaited concert featuring MOG Music for the “Dance with Jesus” event.

As the clock approached four that afternoon, the auditorium flooded with students eagerly awaiting the commencement of the praise concert. Various ministers took the stage to inspire and uplift the audience, but the highlight of the evening arrived at 8 PM when MOG Music delivered an unforgettable performance that would resonate in the hearts of OLAG students for years to come.

On Saturday, March 15, SRC Week reached its exhilarating climax with a grand funfair, swarming with a multitude of students from various high schools within the region, which included Saint Monica’s SHS, Saint Louis SHS, Opoku Ware SHS, KNUST SHS, and Fast Track College. The guest schools delighted attendees with captivating performances, further elevating the festive atmosphere. To add to the excitement, our primary sponsor, Pizzaman Chickenman, brought in a food truck that catered for guests, with a bounty of delicious treats.

The laughter, camaraderie, and vivacious energy of SRC Week encapsulated the essence of our school spirit, alleviating our stress through an intermission from academic schedules, creating lasting memories for all involved, and reminding us of the importance of unity, purpose and intentionality in shaping our futures.
