One event, being a domestic sensation, captures the attention of citizens and diaspora alike on a yearly basis. Alumni rally together to support their alma maters and students, most expectedly, elevate the spirits of peers who compete on behalf of their schools. October was brimming with excitement as it set in full swing the most anticipated National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). Contestants Leeford Abagna, Samuel Ofori Agyaman, and Okafor Michael, representing Our Lady of Grace NSMQ team, set out headstrong and laser-focused to make an undisputable impression in this year’s tournament.
Their thrilling journey began as they arrived in Cape Coast, capital of the Central Region, to compete in the preliminary stage of the quiz. Our contestants cut through the rounds with ease, eliminating all schools that were unlucky enough to cross our path. Their impressive performances propelled the team into the round of sixteen, where the challenge intensified against tougher opponents—Assin State College and Bueman Senior High School.
In the opening round of the contest, Our Lady of Grace SHS wasted no time in asserting dominance. They answered questions with confidence and precision, finishing the first round with a remarkable 21 points, while Assin State College trailed behind with just 10 points and Bueman SHS earned barely a handful of three points.
Moving into Round Two, the energy in the auditorium reached a fever pitch. The audience was on the edge of its seats as our contestants continued their impressive streak, answering every question posed and catapulting their score to an astonishing 40 points. Even the Quiz Mistress, Dr. Anita Oppong, an epitome of composure and professionalism, couldn’t suppress her smile. She seemed to share the thrill of the moment, particularly as Assin State College and Bueman SHS looked on in disbelief at their rapid descent in the ranks. Although Assin State College made a determined effort to close the gap during the fourth round, our team remained steadfast, holding their ground firmly.
The competition reached a climax at the round of riddles, where contestants showcased their cleverness and wit. Our Lady of Grace SHS sealed their remarkable performance by successfully answering three challenging riddles, securing the coveted GOIL Riddle Bonanza Prize of GH₵800. As the scores flashed on the screen, their total of 59 points left Assin State College and Bueman SHS far behind, and they were further rewarded with an additional GH₵1,000 as the Pepsodent Highest Scorer. With their sights set on the next challenge, OLAGSHS had firmly secured a place in the next phase of the competition.
Along with the one-eighth stage, came a gang of formidable teams from Opoku Ware SHS and Zion Educational College. The intensity was palpable, with each school’s supporters fervently cheering for their respective teams. The competition was fierce, showcasing a blend of knowledge, strategy and teamwork. Despite their relentless efforts, OLAGSHS faced disappointment as they were ultimately defeated, marking the end of their journey in the contest.
However, amidst the heartache, Our Lady of Grace Senior High School stood tall, attaining the record as the only private senior high school to ever reach this stage in the history of the prestigious National Science and Maths Quiz. The overall victors, Mfanstipim Senior High School, basked in the glory of their triumph. Though our team did not return bearing the trophy, they left an indelible mark and a legacy that will be revered and remembered in our community for generations to come.
