Our Lady of Grace Senior High School (OLAG SHS) is known for recognizing and encouraging student innovation and creativity, which is evident from the numerous extracurricular activities conducted on campus and the various clubs and societies coordinated by students. This was showcased on the 6th of July when the Robotics Club of OLAG participated in the World Robotics Olympiad national qualifiers organized by the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation. The club excelled in two categories: Robosports and Robomission, emerging victorious in any one of these would earn us the privilege to represent Ghana at the international championship in Turkey.
OLAG SHS entered three teams, each consisting of five members, to compete in various categories, with two teams in Robosports and one in Robomission. The competition was fierce, going against schools like Prempeh College, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School, and St. Augustine’s College in the race for recognition as national champions. It was a challenging journey that required immense dedication and sacrifice on the part of the robotics team, but their hard work paid off.
Preparations began well in advance, and the students committed countless hours, even sacrificing their vacations, to prepare for the competition. As the day drew nearer, selected students travelled to the venue, where a hotel was arranged for their stay. The collective ingenuity of the team made efficient use of the available resources to invent proficient robots, allowing OLAG to secure first place in Robosports. Also, OLAG claimed second and third positions in Robomission, thus earning the honour of representing Ghana at the World Robotics Olympiad in Turkey.
Interestingly, a former student of OLAG, Jennifer Emefa Agbedor, who was also a member of the robotics club, was drafted by the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation and served as a lead judge in this year’s Robosports category.
Despite this recent victory, our reputation as contestants in the international championship gives cause to withhold celebrations, for the true challenge is yet to come. Once again, OLAG seeks to defy the odds as representatives of Ghana among other great nations and prove to the world that we are a force to be reckoned with.
